Chapter 15

Gossip in the Garden

Following Eli’s outburst and the ensuing drama that catalyzed, the site was closed Friday as well. In an attempt to reduce gossip, Evada conveyed to the greater team that they were being treated to a long weekend leading up to the boat party on Saturday night to commemorate the construction of the museum. Having newfound time on their hands, the team ambled about the hotel grounds, sharing overheard news in secluded pockets.

Chione and Zimah sat on the breakfast veranda at a wicker table beside a wall of climbing strawberries on lattice. Small white flowers and bright red berries contrasted beautifully against the thick, verdurous leaves. As pleasing as this natural art form was, Chione hardly seemed to notice as she stirred her coffee.

“What fascinating news, you and Marcus. While I feel remorse for Ramy, I’m happy for you, Chione.” Zimah glanced her sharp eyes up at the slippery woman as she buttered a piece of toast. “This is what you’ve wanted, you must be delighted.”

“Oh yes, I am, I am . . .” Chione murmured, staring off into the depths of the garden, her head tilted to one side. “I’m pleased that Jane has committed, she showed me the paperwork, it just needs her signature. She intends to review it this morning one last time before she sends it to her lawyer.”

“How complete,” Zimah breathed. “And she expects to retire near the end of this year, right?”

“That seems to be her goal, but you know Jane. It’s only April, she could change her mind. “I’m sure you can manage them just fine. Marcus may be an unpredictable hothead, but he knows his stuff. Darla could be an invaluable resource of guidance if you get on her good side. Or, a thorn in your side if you don’t.” Zimah smiled and continued to reassure Chione, “Give it time. You learned how to manage Jane. That seemed the hardest job of all.”

“You’re right there . . .” Chione smirked, raising her cup to her crafty lips.

Oliver and Collin were floating on the bright waters of the pool, the sun reflected blindingly off its rippling surface around them. With his eyes closed and his head reclined back, Oliver murmured in Collin’s general direction, “While it’s a shame there’s drama occurring everywhere, I must admit, it’s nice getting to relax in the sun unexpectedly.”

Collin chuckled. “That it is.”

“It seems something is being stirred up. I’m curious what’s going on,” Oliver innocently wondered aloud.

“Ah, as of late, things have been mad more often than not,” Collin replied with a deep sigh. “Seems no matter what incredible history we discover, no matter how momentous the site, Jane always finds a
